Exhibition:

One Red Blood

Gulpilil in the Landscape

May 1st - Jun 13th, 2026

They say there are no coincidences

On 29 November 2021, the day David Gulpilil passed, an artist over 500 km away, unknowingly photographed a remote salt lake, capturing what appeared to be the outline of an Aboriginal face in the landscape.

— The first sign of what would become One Red Blood.

"We are the brothers and sisters of the world.

Doesn’t matter if you’re bird, snake, fish or kangaroo.

One Red Blood."

- David Gulpilil

About

One Red Blood - is a tribute exhibition honouring the life and legacy of the late David Gulpilil Ridjimiraril Dalaithngu—actor, bridge builder, and Australian icon.

On the day David Gulpilil passed away, the land spoke. More than 500 kms away, a series of aerial photographs captured that same day, revealed something extraordinary—his likeness emerging through the natural patterns of Australian salt lakes. What followed was a sequence of extraordinary coincidences—connections between image, place, and time—that proved too significant to ignore.

Presented by Phoebe Marson Gulpilil, Damian Walshe-Howling, and Eamon Wyss, the exhibition is not simply a tribute—it is a meeting place between worlds. Expanding through photography, weaving, lineage, storytelling and film screenings, we gain a more intimate insight into the man himself, his ability to move between cultures, and what we may learn from them. In One Red Blood, you are invited to consider how new stories may arise from the patterns we find in the land — stories that speak to who we are today.

Contributions to Exhibition

Eamon Wyss

Eamon Wyss contributes a series of abstract aerial photography of Australian salt lakes, taken by drone, coincidentally the day David Gulpilil passed away. Unmanipulated and meditative, these images capture both the physical and dream-like contours of the land from above. Through his work, the land reveals hidden stories shaped by time and the natural patterns of the landscape.

An invitation

More than a retrospective, One Red Blood is conceived as a meeting place between worlds—an invitation to consider how stories continue to emerge from the land, what they ask of us, and how they might guide us forward. The exhibition draws on Gulpilil’s enduring belief that beneath our differences, we are all “One red blood”, connected, with a shared responsibility to care for each other and for Country.

In bringing together contemporary practice and cultural continuity, the exhibition creates space not only for remembrance, but for listening, reflection and the possibility of a shared future shaped through story.
